Gurumsaray — a Renowned Center of Fergana Ceramics

Gurumsaray is one of the notable centers of Fergana ceramics, distinguished by its fidelity to ancient traditions and strict adherence to time-honored techniques. The decorative language of Gurumsaray masters is markedly archaic: recurring motifs include the jug, the four-leaf pattern, a large cross-shaped emblem, and mirror-like ornamentation that functions simultaneously as background and image.

For more than thirty years, master potter Vakhobjon Buvaev has preserved and developed the traditions of Gurumsaray. He learned the craft from the last renowned master, Usto Maksudali Turapov. In his work, Buvaev employs exclusively natural materials and traditional ceramic technologies.

The color palette of Vakhobjon Buvaev’s ceramics is characteristic of Gurumsaray — a smoky blue-green set against a white ground, creating a harmonious and cohesive visual effect. He produces lyagan platters, badya bowls, barkash (deep bowls with flared rims), kaymokdon vessels, hurma containers, and small jugs for milk. The ornamentation incorporates ancient motifs such as the four-leaf pattern, cross-shaped designs, rooster-comb elements, and polygonal star forms.

Vakhobjon Buvaev has become a master worthy of his teachers and of the unique ceramic school of Gurumsaray.
