Do Feelings Have a History?
The first meeting of Alfrid Bustanov’s lecture course “The World of the Soul. History”
People in the past fell in love, felt jealous, argued with their parents and worried about the future. It may seem easy to understand them because we experience many of the same emotions today. But why were certain feelings considered shameful in some periods and worthy of pride in others? Did words like “love”, “happiness” and “sadness” always mean what they mean today? And what do we miss when we try to understand the experiences of the past through our own perspective?
On November 5, join us at Human House to explore what people in the past felt and how ideas about the inner world of a person have changed over time.
Together with historian Alfrid Bustanov, we will read old letters, poems and personal notes, look for familiar emotions and explore experiences that may seem unusual to us today.
Working with manuscripts and personal archives, Alfrid will show how just a few surviving lines can reveal a great deal about a person, their time and their feelings.
No special knowledge is required — just bring your curiosity and questions!

Люди прошлого тоже влюблялись, ревновали, ссорились с родителями и тревожились о будущем. Кажется, нам легко их понять: ведь мы переживаем то же самое. Но почему одних чувств в разные времена стыдились, а другими гордились? Всегда ли слова «любовь», «счастье» и «печаль» означали то же, что и сегодня? И что мы упускаем, когда пытаемся понять чужие переживания через собственный опыт?
5 ноября в Human House поговорим о том, что чувствовали люди прошлого и как менялось их представление о внутреннем мире человека.
Вместе с историком Альфридом Бусановым будем читать старые письма, стихи и личные записи, искать знакомые переживания и разбираться в том, что сегодня может показаться нам странным.
Альфрид работает с рукописями и личными архивами и покажет, как несколько оставленных строк могут рассказать о человеке, его времени и чувствах.
